Optical Device Slow-down

My CD or DVD drive keeps getting slower and slower. What's wrong?

Dirt, most likely. Mechanical failures won't usually cause an optical drive to simply slow down, although they may stop it entirely. However, dirt or dust in the drive or on the CD can interfere with the operation, forcing the drive to reread sectors in an effort to get the data.

In either case, the cure is simple. If the problem shows up on a particular CD, clean it with rubbing alcohol and a soft clean cloth. Be as gentle as possible. If the problem is dirt in the drive, blow the mechanism out with canned air.

Open the disc tray, hold the can of air right side up and at an angle, and spray out the drive with short bursts of air. Don't spray in one long burst or hold the can upside down because that can spray moisture into the drive. Repeat the procedure several times and then try the drive again.
